Flexi fare, introduced in 2016, prices berths on the premium trains in tiers: the base fare for the first tenth of berths, then 10% more for each further tenth sold, up to a cap of 1.4 times the base. The reservation fee, superfast charge and GST are added at the normal rates. Some trains and classes have since been taken out of the scheme, and discounts are offered on poorly filled ones.
The practical effect is that booking a Rajdhani on the first morning and booking it a fortnight later can differ by a third. Cancellation charges are calculated on the fare actually paid.
