Trains whose average speed clears the superfast threshold carry a superfast surcharge on every ticket, from ₹15 in Second Sitting to ₹75 in the top classes. Superfast trains have a 2 as the second digit of their five-digit number, which is the quick way to tell whether the charge applies.
The charge is part of the fare for cancellation and refund purposes. It is not refunded because the train ran late, but a train more than three hours late does ground a TDR for the full fare if you choose not to travel.
