The lower berth is the one everyone in the bay sits on between 6 am and 10 pm, so the person holding it shares it during the day and gets it to themselves at night. Senior citizens, women aged 45 and over and pregnant women get priority for lower berths through a dedicated quota when they book alone or in a small group, and the system tries to allot one automatically.
On the PNR and ticket it appears as LB after the berth number. In Sleeper and 3A coaches the lower berths are the odd-numbered ones in each bay pattern, a detail the berth position finder works out for any number.
